Nvidia’s controversial neural-rendering tech, DLSS 5, is now officially available in NBA 2K27, marking the start of a new era for the company. DLSS 5 will also come to RTX 40-series soon after current work on optimizing it for the RTX 50-series has reached a satisfactory state.

Shipments of standalone graphics processors for PCs grow sequentially and year-over-year amid shortage of components and increased prices.

DLSS 5 officially releases later this week, but we tested it on the RTX 5090 using community mods to see what kind of performance drop and extra power draw you can expect.

Nvidia has confirmed DLSS 5 will launch on September 3 in NBA2K27. It will be supported on all RTX 50 series GPUs, laptops, and GeForce NOW.

The entire PC hardware industry is in shambles when it comes to consumer products, and GPUs are one of the most affected components. Everything from budget options to high-end models is now significantly more expensive than what it could be had for a year ago.
Overclocking utility mVolt+ seems to have been blocked by the latest Nvidia driver update, hard crashing the moment you try to adjust the core power limit. However, it seems like a driver conflict more than a deliberate blacklist since another app, Hydra 2.3B Pro, is working just fine.

DLSS 5 now runs on Ampere GPUs thanks to a patched DLL, but performance is expectedly poor for the most part. You can get up to 30-40 FPS in edge cases with minimum in-game settings, but newer titles can tank FPS to single digits.

TecLab, a Brazilian YouTuber, has just shown the most dangerous method of bypassing the 16-pin connector on an RTX 5090 — by soldering wires directly to the card’s PCB. In an attempt to save the GPU from melting, they’ve created perhaps an even bigger fire hazard.
One modder has reverse-engineered DLSS 5 to function on RTX 4000 series Ada Lovelace-based GPUs, porting incompatible CUDA instructions within the Neural Rendering DLL, enabling them to be read on previous-gen hardware.
DLSS 5 has apparently leaked, originating from inside a new game.
